IN A DISTANT GALAXY, THE PEACEFUL PLANET LORIEN WAS DECIMATED BY THE BRUTAL MOGADORIANS.

The last survivors of Lorien—the Garde—were sent to Earth as children. Scattered across the continents, they developed their extraordinary powers known as Legacies and readied themselves to defend their adopted home world.

The Garde thwarted the Mogadorian invasion of Earth. In the process, they changed the very nature of the planet. Legacies began to manifest in human beings.

These new Garde frighten some people, while others look for ways to manipulate them to their benefit.

And although the Legacies are meant to protect Earth, not every Garde will use their powers for good.

I AM PITTACUS LORE. RECORDER OF THE FATES, CHRONICLER OF THE LEGACIES.

I TELL THE TALES OF THOSE WHO WOULD SHAPE WORLDS.

CHAPTER ONE

KOPANO OKEKE

LAGOS, NIGERIA

THE WEEK BEFORE THE INVASION, KOPANO’S father, Udo, sold their TV. Despite his mother’s fervent prayers for his father to find a new job, Udo was unemployed, and they were three months behind on rent. Kopano didn’t mind. He knew a new TV would manifest soon. Football season was coming and his father wouldn’t miss it.

When the alien warships appeared, Kopano’s whole family crowded into his uncle’s apartment down the hall. Kopano’s first reaction was to grin at his two younger brothers.
